Writing honest and clear headlines that readers trust

A headline is a promise. Learn how to write titles that attract readers and still tell the truth about what is inside.

Writing honest and clear headlines that readers trust

Your headline is the first thing a reader sees and often the only thing they read before deciding to click. A good headline attracts attention. A great one also keeps its promise. Misleading titles may win a click today, but they cost you trust tomorrow.

What makes a headline good

  • Clear: the reader understands what the article is about.
  • Specific: it names a number, a person, a place or a problem.
  • Useful: it hints at a benefit or an answer.
  • Honest: the article really delivers what the title says.

Compare these

  • Weak: "Money tips"
  • Better: "Five ways to save ₦500 a day on a student budget"

The second version tells the reader exactly what they will get.

Simple patterns that work

  1. How to: "How to confirm a bank transfer really arrived."
  2. Numbered lists: "Seven digital skills worth learning first."
  3. Questions: "What is a BVN, and why do apps ask for it?"
  4. Mistakes to avoid: "Six mistakes new bloggers make."
  5. Explanations: "How internet calls work."

Avoid the clickbait trap

Titles like "You will not believe what happened next" or "This one trick will make you rich" promise too much and say too little. Readers feel tricked, leave quickly and may not return. Search engines and ad networks also prefer content that satisfies readers.

Keep it a sensible length

Aim for about 6 to 12 words. Very long titles are cut off in search results and on phones.

Put the main idea first

Start with the words readers are likely to search for. If your article explains "monthly budgets", include that phrase near the beginning.

Test and refine

Write five versions of your headline, read them aloud and choose the one that is clearest. Ask a friend which one they would click and why.

Match the opening paragraph

After the headline, your first paragraph should confirm that the reader is in the right place and show what they will learn. When headline and content agree, readers stay longer and trust you more.

Good headlines are not tricks. They are simple, honest labels that help the right reader find the right article.
