How to write product descriptions that answer questions and sell

A good product description tells the buyer exactly what they are getting and why it helps them. It answers questions before they ask.

Start with the customer

Think about who will use the item and what problem it solves. A bag for students needs different words from a bag for travellers.

Include the facts

1. Name and type of the product
2. Size, weight or capacity
3. Material and colour options
4. What is in the box or package
5. Care or usage instructions
6. Price, delivery area and how long it takes

Show benefits

A feature says what the product is. A benefit says what it does for the buyer. "Waterproof zip" is a feature, and "keeps your books dry in the rain" is a benefit. Use both, but keep the claims true.

Keep it simple

• Use short sentences and everyday words.
• Put the most important details first.
• Use bullet points for sizes and features.
• Avoid shouting in capital letters or too many symbols.

Be honest

Describe flaws such as a slight colour difference between the screen and the real item. Honest descriptions reduce returns and complaints, and build repeat customers.

Add a clear next step

End with a short instruction such as "Message us to order, delivery within two days in Lagos". Check spelling and prices before you post.
