Website and app testing for beginners: what testers actually do

Companies want to know if their website or app is easy to use. Testers try tasks and give feedback or report problems.

What testers do

• Follow steps, such as "sign up and buy an item", and note anything confusing
• Look for errors, broken buttons, slow pages or spelling mistakes
• Record the screen or write notes about what happened
• Give opinions about design and clarity

Skills that help

Attention to detail, clear writing and patience are the most useful. You should be able to describe a problem so another person can repeat it: what you did, what you expected and what happened instead.

How to write a good report

1. Give a short title, such as "Pay button does not respond".
2. List the steps to repeat it.
3. Write what you expected to happen.
4. Write what actually happened.
5. Note your phone or browser and attach a screenshot if allowed.

Finding work

Look for established testing platforms and company pages that explain how they pay and what they need. Read the terms and confidentiality rules carefully, since you may see unreleased products.

Be realistic

Tests may be short and paid per task, and not every applicant is accepted. Do not pay for test jobs, and never share your private passwords or banking details as part of testing.
