How to track your online earnings in a simple notebook or spreadsheet

If you earn money from several small sources, it is easy to lose track of how much you really made. A simple record fixes that. It also helps you see your best hours, your best tasks and the costs that are quietly eating your profit.

The five-column record

Create a table with these five columns, either in an exercise book or on a spreadsheet:

Date, Source, Time spent, Amount earned, Costs.

• Source is where the money came from, such as a platform, a client or a product.
• Time spent is in minutes or hours.
• Costs include data, transport, printing or any fee taken out.

Add two simple calculations

At the end of each week, add up your earnings and your costs. Then work out:

• Net income = earnings minus costs.
• Earnings per hour = net income divided by hours spent.

The second number is powerful. It shows you which activities are worth your time. A task that pays a little more but takes twice as long may actually earn you less per hour.

Use a spreadsheet when you are ready

If you use a spreadsheet, a SUM formula adds a column for you, and a pivot or filter lets you compare sources. A free spreadsheet app on your phone is enough. Keep the file backed up so you do not lose a month of records.

Record fees honestly

Always write down withdrawal fees, bank charges and transfer costs. Many people forget them and think they earn more than they do.

Review monthly
