How to spot fake apps and fake app updates

Fake apps copy real logos to steal passwords and money. Learn the signs and the safest way to install and update apps.

How to spot fake apps and fake app updates

Criminals know that people trust familiar logos. They create fake banking, wallet and betting apps that look almost identical to the real ones, then spread them through links, ads and messages. Once installed, such apps can capture your passwords, read your messages or send payments.

Where fake apps come from

  • Links sent by text, email or chat that offer a "new version".
  • Ads on social media that lead to websites asking you to download a file.
  • Unofficial app stores and "modded" apps that promise free features.
  • Pop-ups claiming that your phone has a virus and needs a "cleaner".

Safer ways to install

Install apps only from your phone's official store. Search for the app yourself rather than following a link. Even in official stores, check the developer name, the number of downloads, the reviews and the date of the last update.

Spot the differences

Look for spelling mistakes in the description, a developer name that does not match the company, very few downloads, strange screenshots or reviews that all sound the same. If you are unsure, visit the company's real website and look for a link to the official app.

Beware of fake update messages

A pop-up on a website that says "Your app is out of date, tap to update" is almost always a trick. Updates should come through your phone's app store or system settings, not through random pages or messages.

Check what the app asks for

If a new app asks for permission to read your text messages, control the screen or install other apps, deny it and uninstall. Legitimate apps explain why they need such access.

If you installed something suspicious

  1. Disconnect from the internet.
  2. Uninstall the app from the settings menu.
  3. Change passwords for your email and banking accounts using a safe device.
  4. Check your bank and wallet statements for unknown activity and call your bank if needed.
  5. Run a scan with a trusted security tool and keep your phone updated.

Share the warning

If a fake app is circulating in your community, tell people. Scammers rely on silence and speed. A short message to family and friends could save someone a lot of money.
