Nervousness is normal. With preparation and a few simple techniques, you can speak more clearly and calmly in front of people.

How to speak with more confidence in class, meetings and interviews

Most people feel nervous when they speak in front of others. Confidence comes mostly from preparation and practice, not from being born outgoing.

Prepare your main message

Decide the one thing you want people to remember. Write three supporting points and one short example for each. You do not need to memorise every word.

Practise out loud

Rehearse alone, then in front of a friend or a mirror. Record yourself on your phone and listen for a rushed pace, filler words or a very quiet voice.

Calm your body

  1. Breathe slowly in through your nose and out through your mouth before you start.
  2. Drop your shoulders and stand or sit with your feet on the ground.
  3. Smile briefly, since it relaxes your face and your voice.

While you speak

  • Speak a little slower than normal, and pause between ideas.
  • Look at friendly faces in different parts of the room.
  • Use simple words and short sentences.
  • If you lose your place, take a breath, look at your notes and continue.

If you make a mistake

Continue calmly. Most people barely notice small errors, and they remember your message more than the slip.

Build the habit

Start with small chances, such as asking a question in a meeting or reading aloud in a group. Each time you speak, it becomes a little easier.
