How to prepare for an online interview

Video interviews are common now. A little preparation with your setting, your answers and your technology can make a big difference.

How to prepare for an online interview

Many employers and clients now interview by video call or phone. The format is convenient, but it brings extra things to prepare: your connection, your background and the way you appear on camera. With a few simple steps you can feel calm and look professional.

Check your technology a day before

  • Test your internet connection and have a backup, such as mobile data.
  • Charge your phone or laptop and keep the charger nearby.
  • Test the app you will use, including the camera and microphone.
  • Close other apps so the call does not lag.

Choose a good place

Sit in a quiet room facing a window or a lamp so your face is lit. Keep the background tidy. Inform people at home about the time so they do not interrupt.

Dress and behave professionally

Dress as you would for an in-person interview, at least from the waist up. Look at the camera when you speak, sit upright and smile naturally. Avoid eating or checking other devices during the call.

Research the organisation

Learn what the business does, who its customers are and what the role involves. Prepare a short answer to "What do you know about us?" Write two or three questions to ask them at the end.

Prepare answers using a simple pattern

For common questions such as "Tell me about a time you solved a problem", use this structure:

  1. Situation: what was happening?
  2. Task: what was your responsibility?
  3. Action: what did you do?
  4. Result: what changed?

Practise out loud, not just in your head.

Be ready for typical questions

  • Tell us about yourself.
  • Why do you want this role?
  • What are your strengths and areas to improve?
  • Where do you see yourself in a few years?

Keep answers honest and concise, around one to two minutes each.

Handle problems calmly

If the connection fails, send a short message to explain and rejoin. If you do not understand a question, ask politely for it to be repeated.

After the interview

Send a brief thank-you email within a day. Mention one point from the conversation and repeat your interest. This small step shows professionalism.

Preparation reduces nerves. Treat each interview as practice, and you will improve with every one.
