How to handle online bullying and harassment calmly and safely

Being insulted or threatened online is upsetting, but you have options. Here are practical steps to protect yourself, record what happens and get support.

How to handle online bullying and harassment calmly and safely

Online bullying can happen in comments, group chats, messages or on gaming platforms. It may be hurtful words, threats, spreading rumours or sharing private photos without permission. You do not have to put up with it.

First, protect yourself

  1. Do not reply in anger. Many bullies want a reaction.
  2. Take screenshots of messages, usernames, links and dates before anything is deleted.
  3. Block and mute the person, and use the report button on the platform.
  4. Tighten your privacy settings so strangers cannot message you or see your posts.

Tell someone you trust

Speak to a friend, a family member, a teacher or a colleague. Carrying it alone makes it feel heavier. If a child is being bullied, listen calmly, thank them for telling you and keep the evidence.

Report it properly

  • Use the platform's report tools for harassment, threats or fake accounts.
  • If there are threats, blackmail or shared private images, report to the police or the relevant cybercrime unit and keep your screenshots.
  • For school or work cases, tell the school or employer.

Look after yourself

It is normal to feel angry, anxious or ashamed. None of this is your fault. Take breaks from the app, spend time with supportive people and speak to a counsellor or health worker if it affects your sleep or mood.

If you see it happen to someone else

Do not join in or share it. Send the person a kind private message and help them report it.
