Healthy habits for people who work on their phones all day

Long hours on a phone can strain your eyes, neck and mind. These small changes protect your health without costing a kobo.

Healthy habits for people who work on their phones all day

Online work, studying and social life all happen on screens now. The phone is convenient, but hours of looking down can cause tired eyes, neck pain, poor sleep and low energy. A few small habits make a big difference.

Protect your eyes

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds.
  • Adjust brightness to match the room, and use a night or warm-light mode in the evening.
  • Blink often. Screens make us blink less, which dries the eyes.
  • Increase text size so you are not squinting.

Fix your posture

Looking down at a phone puts extra strain on the neck. Raise the phone closer to eye level, rest your elbows on a table or use a simple stand. Sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.

Move every hour

Stand up, stretch your shoulders, roll your neck gently and walk around for a couple of minutes at least once an hour. Set a reminder so you do not forget.

Drink water and eat properly

Keep a bottle of water nearby. Avoid skipping meals to finish "one more task". A simple snack such as groundnuts or fruit gives steady energy better than sugary drinks.

Take real breaks

During breaks, put the phone away. Look outside, talk to someone or do something with your hands. Scrolling social media is not a break for your brain.

Protect your sleep

Avoid screens for an hour before bed if you can. The light and the stimulation can delay sleep. Charge your phone away from your bed to avoid late-night checking.

Look after your mind

Notice how you feel after long sessions online. If you often feel anxious, rushed or low, reduce your time on certain apps and spend more time with people face to face.

Seek help when needed

Persistent eye pain, headaches, numbness in the hands or ongoing sleep problems deserve a visit to a health professional. Do not ignore them.

A simple daily plan

Morning stretch, regular water, a break each hour, a walk outside and a screen-free hour before bed. These habits cost nothing and protect your most valuable tool: your body.
